  INTRODUCTION POWER
  SUPPLY The voltage range of Linear Technology’s PowerPath® circuits can be easily extended with just a few components, thus
  allowing them to meet the needs of virtually all applications.
  This application note presents solutions for circuits that
  must withstand large negative voltages, a reverse adapter
  input for example, and circuits that must withstand large
  positive inputs, such as automotive load-dump.
  EXTENDING THE VOLTAGE RANGE
  Any of Linear’s PowerPath controller circuits can benefit
  from an extended voltage range, even those that already
  have wide operating and absolute maximum voltage
  ranges. For instance, the LTC4412HV and LTC4414 will
  each withstand voltages from –14V to 40V, which can be
  extended further using the techniques described here.
  Likewise, the LTC4412’s range of –14V to 28V can be
  extended. The voltage ranges of monolithic PowerPath
  solutions such as the LTC4411, which ranges from –0.3V
  to 6V, can also be extended, though not as far. …

  Many modern electronic devices need a means to automatically switch between power sources when prompted
  by the insertion or removal of any source. The LTCВ®4412
  simplifies PowerPathTM management and control by providing a low loss, near ideal diode controller function. Any
  circuit that could otherwise use a diode OR to switch
  between power sources can benefit from the LTC4412.
  The forward voltage drop of an LTC4412 ideal diode is far
  less than that of a conventional diode, and the reverse
  current leakage can be smaller for the ideal diode as well
  (see Figure 1). The tiny forward voltage drop reduces
  power losses and self-heating, resulting in extended
  battery life. Features include: Wide supply operating range of 2.5V to 28V (36V
  absolute maximum) Protection of MOSFET from excessive gate-to-source
  voltage with VGS limiter Low quiescent current of 11ВµA with a 3.6V supply,
  independent of the load current A status pin that can be used to enable an auxiliary
  MOSFET power switch or to indicate to a microcontroller
  that an auxiliary supply, such as a wall adapter, is
  present A control input pin for external control, such as from a
  microcontroller Voltage drop across the controlled external MOSFET of

  Introduction
  Solar panels are gaining acceptance as a practical means
  of electricity generation in remote locations, but despite
  improvements in the technology, solar panels remain
  expensive. Much of the expense is the panel itself, where
  the size, and thus cost, of the panel rises with required
  power output. Maximizing panel performance is important in order to realize the smallest, most cost effective
  solution.
  This Design Note presents two simple circuits that increase the energy harvested by a solar panel. In both of
  these cases, the panel charges a battery, which in turn,
  supports operation of the application circuit when the sun
  isn’t shining.
  Design Requirements
  Optimum design of a solar battery charger requires some
  understanding of the characteristics of the panel. First,
  solar panels are leaky due to the large junction area, so the
  battery can discharge through the panel during dark
  periods. Also, every solar panel has a characteristic VI
  curve with a maximum power point, so to the extent that

  Introduction
  Supercapacitors (or ultracapacitors) are п¬Ѓnding their way
  into an increasing number of applications for short-term
  energy storage and applications that require intermittent
  high energy pulses. One such application is a power ridethrough circuit, in which a backup energy source cuts
  in and powers the load if the main power supply fails
  for a short time. This type of application has typically
  been dominated by batteries, but electric double layer
  capacitors (EDLCs) are fast making inroads as their
  price-per-farad, size and effective series resistance per
  capacitance (ESR/C) continue to decrease.
  Figure 1 shows a 5V power ride-through application
  where two series-connected 10F, 2.7V supercapacitors
  charged to 4.8V can support 20W for over a second. The
  LTC3225, a new charge-pump-based supercapacitor
  charger, is used to charge the supercapacitors at 150mA
  and maintain cell balancing while the LTC4412 provides
  automatic switchover between the supercapacitor and
  the main supply. The LTM4616 dual output DC/DC
  ОјModuleTM regulator creates the 1.8V and 1.2V outputs. …

  Introduction
  Redundant arrays of independent disks, or RAID, systems, by nature are designed to preserve data in the face
  of adverse circumstances. One example is power failure,
  thereby threatening data that is temporarily stored in
  volatile memory. To protect this data, many systems
  incorporate a battery-based power backup that supplies
  short-term power—enough watt-seconds for the RAID
  controller to write volatile data to nonvolatile memory.
  However, advances in flash memory performance such
  as DRAM density, lower power consumption and faster
  write time, in addition to technology improvements in
  supercapacitors such as lower ESR and higher capacitance per unit volume, have made it possible to replace
  the batteries in these systems with longer lasting, higher
  performance and “greener” supercapacitors. Figure 1
  shows a supercapacitor-based power backup system
  using the LTCВ®3625 supercapacitor charger, an automatic
  power crossover switch using the LTC4412 PowerPathв„ў
  controller and an LTMВ®4616 dual output ОјModuleВ® DC/
  DC converter.

  Introduction Many consumer electronic devices
  rely on batteries and wall adapters
  for supplying power for portable and
  hand held applications. These devices
  must rely on some method of automatically and smoothly switching between
  the battery and the wall adapter. The
  LTC4411 is a low loss ideal diode
  that simplifies the implementation of
  PowerPathв„ў control circuitry. With
  the LTC4411 it is possible to build
  an entire power management solution
  in a 2mm Г— 3mm footprint.
  The LTC4411 is a low-voltage
  (2.5V to 5.5V) monolithic (no external P-channel MOSFET needed) ideal
  diode. It is pin-compatible with the
  LTC4412 ideal diode controller (except
  the LTC4411 omits the pin that the
  LTC4412 provides to drive the gate
  of an external P-channel MOSFET).
