  Application Note 66 is a compendium of "power circuits" from the first five years of Linear Technology. This application note contains circuits that can power most any system you can imagine, from desktop computer systems to micropower systems for portable and handheld equipment. Also included here are circuits that provide 300W or more of power factor corrected DC from a universal input. Battery chargers are included, some that charge several battery types, some that are optimized to charge a single type. MOSFET drivers, high side switches and H-bridge driver circuits are also included, as is an article on simple thermal analysis.

  INTRODUCTION
  Application Note 66 is a compendium of “power circuits”
  from the first five years of Linear Technology. The objective
  is to collect the useful circuits from the magazine into
  several applications notes (another, AN67, will collect
  signal processing circuits into one Application Note) so
  that valuable “gems” will not be lost. This Application Note
  contains circuits that can power most any system you can
  imagine, from desktop computer systems to micropower
  systems for portable and handheld equipment. Also included here are circuits that provide 300W or more of
  power factor corrected DC from a universal input. Battery
  chargers are included, some that charge several battery
  types, some that are optimized to charge a single type.
  MOSFET drivers, high side switches and H-bridge driver
  circuits are also included, as is an article on simple thermal
  analysis. With these introductory remarks, I’ll stand aside

  Eighteen circuits are presented in this compilation. Signal sources include a voltage controlled current source, an amplitude/frequency stabilized sine wave oscillator, a versatile, 0V to 50V wideband level shift and four sub-nanosecond pulse generators with risetimes as low as 20ps. Five signal conditioners appear; a unique, single positive rail powered amplifier with output to (and below) zero volts, a milliohmmeter, a 0.02% accurate instrumentation amplifier with 120dB CMRR at 125VCM, a 100MHz switch with 5mV control channel feedthrough and a 5V powered, 15ppm linearity quartz stabilized V→F, converter. The power circuits section features a Xenon flashlamp supply, two 5V powered, 0V to 300V DC/DC converters, a fixed 200V output circuit for APD bias, a 100W 0V to 500V, 28V powered converter and a high current paralleling scheme for linear regulators. Two appended sections consider measurement technique and connection practice in sub-nanosecond circuits.

  Introduction
  Occasionally, we are tasked with designing circuitry for a
  specific purpose. The request may have customer origins
  or it may be an in-house requirement. Alternately, a circuit
  may be developed because its possibility is simply too
  attractive to ignore1. Over time, these circuits accumulate,
  encompassing a wide and useful body of proven capabilities. They also represent substantial effort. These considerations make publication an almost obligatory proposition
  and, as such, a group of circuits is presented here. This is
  not the first time we have displayed such wares and, given
  the encouraging reader response, it will not be the last2.
  Eighteen circuits are included in this latest effort, roughly
  arranged in the categories given in this publication’s title.
  They appear at the next paragraph.

  Introduction
  Available in either 16-pin DIP or narrow body SOIC
  packages, the CMOS LTC В®1390 is a high performance
  8-to-1 analog multiplexer. It is addressed through a
  3-wire digital interface featuring bidirectional serial data.
  The LTC1390 features a typical on-resistance of 45О©,
  typical switch leakage of 50pA and guaranteed breakbefore-make switch operation. Charge injection is В±10pC
  (max). All digital inputs remain logic compatible whether
  operating on single or dual supplies. The inputs are
  robust, easily withstanding 100mA fault currents. The LTC1390 operates over a wide power supply voltage
  range of 3V to В±15V.
  Low Power, Daisy-Chain Serial Interface,
  8-Channel A/D System
  Figure 1 shows the LTC1390 connected to the LTC1286
  12-bit micropower A/D converter. The Clock (CLK)
  and Chip Select (CS) signals are connected in parallel
  to the LTC1390 and LTC1286. Both the LTC1390 and
  the LTC1286 are designed for serial data transfer. The

  Fault-tolerant systems ensure their users uninterrupted
  service and prevent data loss through acquisition of
  accurate supply voltage, load current and temperature
  information. By comparing this information to predetermined operating profiles, the system decides if the
  measured data is within nominal ranges or if a fault
  condition is looming. If a fault condition is imminent,
  the system takes corrective action before data is lost. The measured data can also be used to establish preventative maintenance schedules. The system develops
  stress profiles based on operating time and the measured
  values of the different parameters. These profiles suggest
  a need for increased preventative maintenance when the
  measured values indicate high sustained peak operation
  over a given time period or a relaxed schedule during
  times of reduced activity.

  The LT®1366 is Linear Technology’s first bipolar dual
  operational amplifier to combine rail-to-rail input and
  output operation with precision VOS specifications. The
  LT1366 maintains precision specifications over a wide
  range of operating conditions. The device will operate
  with supply voltages as low as 1.8V and is fully specified for 3V, 5V, and ±15V operation. Offset voltage is
  typically 200ОјV when operating from a single 5V supply. Open-loop gain, AVOL, is 2 million driving a 2kО©
  load. Supply current is typically 375μA per amplifier.
  The combination of precision specifications and rail-torail operation makes the LT1366 a versatile amplifier,
  suitable for signal processing tasks that demand the
  widest possible common-mode range.
  Precision Low Dropout Regulator
  Microprocessors and complex digital circuits frequently
  specify tight control of power supply characteristics.
  The circuit shown in Figure 1 provides a precise 3.6V,
  1A output from a minimum 3.8V input voltage. The
  circuit’s nominal operating voltage is 4.75V ±5%. The
  voltage reference and resistor ratios determine output
  voltage accuracy, while the LT1366’s high gain enforces
  0.2% line and 0.2% load regulation. Quiescent current
  is about 1mA and does not change appreciably with supply or load. All components are available in surface …
