  INTRODUCTION
  Overview
  This Application Note presents guidelines for circuits utilizing Linear Technology’s switched-capacitor filter family.
  Although the switched-capacitor filter has been designed
  into “telecom” circuits for over 20 years, the newer devices are faster, quieter and lower in distortion. These
  filters now achieve total harmonic distortion (THD) below
  –76dB (LTC®1064-2), wideband noise below 55μVRMS
  (LTC1064-3), high frequency of operation (LTC1064-2,
  LTC1064-3 and LTC1064-4 to 100kHz) and steep roll-offs
  from passband to stopband (LTC1064-1: –72dB at 1.5 ×
  fCUTOFF). These specifications make the new generation of
  switched-capacitor filters from LTC candidates to replace
  all but the most esoteric of active RC filter designs.
  Application Note 40 takes the mystery from the design of
  high performance active filters using switched-capacitor
  filter integrated circuits. To help the designer get the highest performance available, this Note covers most of the
  problems prevalent in system level switched-capacitor

  The pace of the world of digital communications is increasing at a tremendous rate. Each day the engineer is requested to compact more data in the same channel bandwidth with closer channel spacing. This application note discusses some of the requirements and techniques for using the new LTC1064/1164 and LTC1264-7 filters which were designed specifically for digital communications. The terms "channel bandwidth," "eye diagrams" and "linear phase" filtering are discussed without the need for the "engineering speak" which permeates many textbook explanations of the same subjects.

  Richard Markell INTRODUCTION Enter the LTC1264-7 Linear Phase Filter The pace of the world of digital communications is increasing at a tremendous rate. Daily, the engineer is
  requested to compact more data in the same channel
  bandwidth with closer channel spacing. As an example,
  multilevel Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) systems
  can be used to compress data into a bandwidth limited
  channel. The most typical PAM system is simply ones and
  zeros, the binary system. By shifting from a two-level
  system to a four-level system, we double the data bandwidth in a bandwidth limited channel at the expense of
  requiring a 8dB higher signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver.1 This signal-to-noise trade-off to cram more bits
  into the same bandwidth is why filtering is becoming more
  and more critical in data transmission. This is precisely
  why the LTC data communications filters were born. The LTC1264-7 has group delay which is equal to the
  Bessel in the passband while it has rejection at the second
  harmonic of the cutoff frequency of – 30dB versus the
  Bessel’s – 12dB. Thus, Bessel is banished, replaced by a
  better linear phase solution for the data transmission
  problem. Even the most conservative data compaction
  engineer will agree that the LTC1264-7 is “Better than

  The LTCВ®1069-X family of monolithic п¬Ѓlters offers economical solutions for a wide variety of signal processing
  applications. 10

  –10 GAIN (dB) – 20 Members of the LTC1069-X family are available as
  standard products or as user-specified, semicustom
  п¬Ѓlters. Both products are fully integrated and are available in small SO-8 packages. They require only power
  supply decoupling capacitors and a clock source to set
  the cutoff frequency and form a complete п¬Ѓlter.
  As semicustom filters, the LTC1069-X can be configured
  as a single 8th order п¬Ѓlter or as two 4th order п¬Ѓlters
  with either identical or independent characteristics. The
  technology allows the user to specify and optimize the
  п¬Ѓlter response, sampling rate and power consumption
  for each application. The LTC1069-X can realize lowpass,
  bandpass, highpass, notch and allpass responses.
  The LTC1069-X family also includes standard products,
  the LTC1069-1, LTC1069-6 and LTC1069-7.
  The LTC1069-1 and LTC1069-6 offer either low or very

  Richard Markell and Nello Sevastopoulos Many signal processing applications require a front end
  low pass п¬Ѓlter to bandwidth limit the signal of interest.
  This п¬Ѓlter is often crucial to the system designer since
  it determines the number of bits which the system can
  resolve by its noise and dynamic range. Until now, the
  designer rejected the use of switched-capacitor п¬Ѓlters
  as being too noisy, having too much distortion, or because they were not usable at a high enough frequency.
  The LTC В®1064-1 8th order Cauer п¬Ѓlter can compete
  directly with the discrete operational amplifier design.
  Not only that, but the cost and performance advantages
  are tremendous.
  The LTC1064-1 is a complete 8th order, clock tunable
  Cauer (also known as elliptic) low pass switched-capacitor п¬Ѓlter with internal thin film resistors. The passband
  ripple is В±0.1dB and the stopband attenuation at 1.5 times
  the cutoff frequency is 72dB. The device is available in
  a 14-pin DIP or 16-pin surface mount package.
  The LTC1064-1 boasts internal thin п¬Ѓlm resistors factory
  adjusted to optimize the Cauer 8th order response. The
  LTC1064-1 attains wideband noise (2kHz-102kHz) of
  150ОјVRMS and a total harmonic distortion of 0.03% for

  Sophisticated п¬Ѓlter system designs frequently demand
  expensive printed circuit boards chock-full of operational amplifiers and precision capacitors. Digital filters
  require fewer but more expensive devices and a lot of
  software. However, advances in switched capacitor
  п¬Ѓlters have made the design of elegant п¬Ѓlter systems
  cheaper, easier and much smaller. The system shown
  in block diagram form in Figure 1 is a good example. It
  is a typical system for п¬Ѓltering transducer signals. Its
  input is a DC-to-20kHz signal; its output allows signals
  to be analyzed in three frequency bands.

  Introduction
  Octave or decade wide bandpass п¬Ѓlters are non-trivial
  to design. Wide bandpass п¬Ѓltering requires the designer use a highpass п¬Ѓlter at the input in series with
  a lowpass filter to achieve the desired specifications.
  This becomes evident if one examines the transfer
  functions of the state-variable-filter configuration, be
  it switched capacitor or active RC. Either option limits
  severely the achievable dynamic range if a wideband
  bandpass п¬Ѓlter is designed using the bandpass output.
  Wideband bandpass п¬Ѓlters occupy a niche in the communications area of signal processing. The wideband
  bandpass function is required in receiver IF applications
  which traditionally use the crystal п¬Ѓlter and/or active
  RC’s. Sonar applications also demand steep, wide, low
  noise bandpass filters to allow analysis of “chunks” of
  the frequency spectrum, one at a time or in parallel.
  Recent improvements in switched capacitor п¬Ѓlter technology allow designers the luxury of using switched
  capacitor п¬Ѓlters in these applications. True clock tuning
  allows variable bandwidth п¬Ѓlters to be implemented
  with only a few parts.
