  INTRODUCTION
  Application Note 67 is a collection of circuits from the first
  five years of Linear Technology, targeting data conversion,

  INTRODUCTION
  Application Note 84 is the fourth in a series that excerpts
  useful circuits from Linear Technology magazine to preserve them for posterity. This application note highlights
  “power” circuits from issue VI:1 (February 1996) through
  issue VIII:4 (November 1998). Another application note
  will feature data conversion, interface and signal processing circuits from the same era. Like its predecessor, AN 66,
  this Application Note includes circuits that can power
  most any system you can imagine, from “server” power
  supplies that generate in excess of 50 amps to micropower systems for portable and handheld equipment.
  Also included are power converters that can be voltage programmed using Intel’s VID code. Charge pump converters, linear regulators and battery charger circuits are
  included here, with Li-Ion batteries receiving extra attention. There are, of course, circuits that cannot be so simply
  categorized. Come browse. I’ll get out of the way and let
  the authors describe their creations.

  The LT ®1510 and LT1511 are high efficiency batterycharging chips capable of output powers up to 25W and
  50W, respectively. These chips are intended for fastcharging batteries in modern portable equipment where
  space is at a premium. They are therefore packaged in
  low profile surface mount packages and run at a fairly
  high frequency (200kHz) to minimize the height and
  footprint of the complete battery charger. To minimize
  thermal resistance, these packages are specially constructed with the die-attach paddle connected (fused)
  directly to multiple package leads.
  When operating these chips near their maximum
  power levels, extra care should be taken to minimize
  chip power dissipation and to keep the overall thermal
  resistance of the package-board combination as low as
  possible. Figure 1 shows a simple way to reduce power
  dissipation with no loss in performance. The LT1510
  and LT1511 use an external diode (D2) and capacitor
  (CX) to generate a voltage that is higher than the input
  voltage. This voltage is used to supply the base drive
  to the internal NPN power switch to allow it to saturate
  with a forced hFE of about 50. Switching speed and onresistance losses are minimized with this technique. The

  The LTВ®1511 current mode PWM battery charger is the
  simplest, most efficient solution for fast charging modern rechargeable batteries that require constant-current
  and/or constant-voltage charging including lithiumion (Li-Ion), nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) and nickelcadmium (NiCd).

  Introduction
  A single Lithium-Ion cell is often the battery of choice
  for portable equipment because of its high energy
  density. The 3V to 4.1V provided by a Lithium-Ion cell
  is also a good match for modern low voltage circuits,
  often simplifying the power supply. Despite these
  advantages, designers are often frustrated when attempting to design precision charging circuitry that
  meets battery manufacturers’ specifications. Figure 2
  is a simple, cost-effective linear charger that satisfies
  these precision Lithium-Ion charging requirements.
  Lithium-Ion cell manufacturers generally recommend
  a constant-current/constant-voltage (CC/CV) charging
  technique. Although conceptually simple, charging a
  Lithium-Ion cell requires very accurate control of the
  float voltage to obtain high capacity with long cycle
  life. If the voltage is too low, the cell will not be fully
  charged; if the voltage is too high, the cycle life is significantly degraded. Excessive voltage to the cell can
  also result in venting and other hazardous conditions
  (specific hazards depend upon the cell’s construction
  and chemistry).

  Introduction
  Battery charging in notebook computers and other portable products generally involves compromises. A notebook computer’s AC adapter is usually sized to charge the
  battery at its maximum rate when the computer is off. In
  this condition, the computer draws essentially no power,
  so the full capacity of the adapter can be used for charging
  the battery. However, when the computer is turned on,
  charging current is usually reduced to a low rate to avoid
  overloading the AC adapter. You can use your computer
  or fast charge your battery, but not both at the same time.
  Linear Technology has developed a new battery charger
  topology that maximizes the battery charging rate, even
  when the computer is on, without increasing the size
  or capacity of the AC adapter power source. Instead of
  simply reducing the charging current to an arbitrarily
  low level, the charger monitors the current drawn from
  the AC adapter and automatically reduces the charging
  current only when necessary to avoid overloading the
  AC adapter. At all other times, the charging current can
  be at the maximum programmed value if the battery

  Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are rapidly becoming the battery of choice for many battery-powered
  products. These products include notebook computers, PDAs, video camcorders, digital cameras, cellular
  phones, portable test equipment and others. Compared
  to other rechargeable power sources, Li-Ion batteries
  have higher energy density for both weight and volume
  and provide longer run time between charges. tery from overtemperature and overcurrent conditions.
  In addition, battery packs may also contain back-toback MOSFET switches that disconnect the battery if
  an overcurrent condition exists for either charge or
  discharge, or if an overvoltage or undervoltage condition exists. Many of these precautions are needed

  overcharge and overdischarge conditions. Charging Li-Ion batteries is a relatively simple process.
  Apply a current-limited (at a 1C rate) constant voltage

  charge cycle may also include precharge qualification
  for battery temperature and precharge qualification for
