  Application Note 84 is a collection of "power circuits" from the years 1996 through 1998 as seen in the pages of Linear Technology magazine. This Application Note collects circuits that can output tens of amps to circuits that can operate a handheld device for several years. In addition to a wide variety of traditional power supply circuits (Buck, Boost, Inverting, Flyback, Linear Regulators, etc.) we include circuits for charging batteries, several Power Management circuits as well as circuits that highlight a very low noise switching regulator.

  INTRODUCTION
  Application Note 84 is the fourth in a series that excerpts
  useful circuits from Linear Technology magazine to preserve them for posterity. This application note highlights
  “power” circuits from issue VI:1 (February 1996) through
  issue VIII:4 (November 1998). Another application note
  will feature data conversion, interface and signal processing circuits from the same era. Like its predecessor, AN 66,
  this Application Note includes circuits that can power
  most any system you can imagine, from “server” power
  supplies that generate in excess of 50 amps to micropower systems for portable and handheld equipment.
  Also included are power converters that can be voltage programmed using Intel’s VID code. Charge pump converters, linear regulators and battery charger circuits are
  included here, with Li-Ion batteries receiving extra attention. There are, of course, circuits that cannot be so simply
  categorized. Come browse. I’ll get out of the way and let
  the authors describe their creations.

  Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) are often
  used to illuminate liquid crystal displays (LCDs). These
  displays appear in laptop computers, gas pumps, automobiles, test equipment, medical equipment and the
  like. The lamps themselves are small, relatively efficient
  and inexpensive, but they must be driven by specialized power supplies. High AC voltage (significantly
  higher than the operating voltage) is needed to start
  the lamp. A sinusoidal waveform is desired, the current
  must be regulated, efficiency should be high and the
  power supply must be self-protecting in the event of
  an open-lamp condition.
  CCFL power supplies consisting of a Royer class, selfoscillating sine wave converter driven by an LTВ®1513
  switching regulator are shown in Figures 1 and 2. These
  circuits are especially suited for low voltage operation,
  with guaranteed operation for input voltages as low as
  2.7V and as high as 20V. High voltage output regulated
  Royer converters, although capable of 90% efficiency,
  are not well-suited for low input voltage operation and

  Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are rapidly becoming the battery of choice for many battery-powered
  products. These products include notebook computers, PDAs, video camcorders, digital cameras, cellular
  phones, portable test equipment and others. Compared
  to other rechargeable power sources, Li-Ion batteries
  have higher energy density for both weight and volume
  and provide longer run time between charges. tery from overtemperature and overcurrent conditions.
  In addition, battery packs may also contain back-toback MOSFET switches that disconnect the battery if
  an overcurrent condition exists for either charge or
  discharge, or if an overvoltage or undervoltage condition exists. Many of these precautions are needed
  because lithium-ion cells are easily damaged by both
  overcharge and overdischarge conditions. Charging Li-Ion batteries is a relatively simple process.
  Apply a current-limited (at a 1C rate) constant voltage
  (В±1% tolerance) for approximately three hours, then
  stop charging. (C is a battery term used to indicate
  the Ampere-hour capacity of a battery). A complete
  charge cycle may also include precharge qualification
  for battery temperature and precharge qualification for
