ORing controllers are used to replace diodes in applications looking to improve system efficiency. They are designed to behave like a diode as much as possible. However, at light loads, with low RDS(on) FET’s, ORing controllers can create an oscillation on the rail that not only creates ripple at the output, but will also lower light load efficiency. This application note gives an overview of the operation of the TPS2410/12 and TPS2411/13. It describeshow each device controls an external N-channel MOSFET to emulate an ideal diode. It does not addressthe other pin functions of the TPS2410/11, UV and OV inputs, filtering, or the status outputs.
